Demo Try a simplified ride-scheduling demo on synthetic data

Full-stack engineer. Making software that makes you money.

My auto-scheduler plans about 1,900 rides a day in about three minutes, and my billing automation generates 20,000+ government forms a month. Together they save over $500K a year in labor.

What I've built

Software people use every working day: it plans their routes, bills their trips and tracks their rides.

Figures marked "Estimated by Ryan" are my own estimates, not audited numbers.

01Auto-scheduling· NorthStar

Auto-scheduler

In production · Sole engineer

A custom engine that plans a full day of pre-planned medical rides in about three minutes.

I built it alone: a custom engine in C#/.NET. It works in passes: seeding, construction, then improvement, and every pass uses one shared feasibility checker. It places wheelchair and ambulatory riders on a mixed fleet, inside time windows and hours-of-service rules, and carpools riders where it can. One solve runs millions of calculations. The company's schedulers still review the plan.

02Automation

Billing and forms automation

In production · I built it

Government forms for every Medicaid and Medicare trip, generated automatically.

Every Medicaid and Medicare trip needs government forms. Filling them in by hand used to take about 64 hours of work every day: 8 people, 8 hours each. I built the system that does it now. Trip data comes from the transport software's API into Google Sheets, and iText7 fills in each form. It generates more than 20,000 PDFs a month and saves about $350K a year in labor.

Platform foundations

Still in use · Data models and API design

The data models the company's software still stands on, and the API design behind them.

I wrote the data models for every core entity, and they are still the foundation today. I laid out the API design with Postman and C#/.NET. Earlier, I designed and deployed .NET microservices on AWS: API Gateway, Cognito, Elastic Beanstalk, SNS, SQS and RDS. Teammates have since taken over AWS. I also built real-time GPS tracking for the driver app, within the limits of its service tier.

Design and proof of concept

Led to a funded team · Sole developer and designer

I designed a replacement for the old dispatch software, then built the proofs that got a team funded.

I was the only developer in a brand-new department. I researched the old dispatch software with the dispatchers who used it. Then I designed its replacement alone in Figma: wireframes, visual design and interaction. I built the proof-of-concept web app and driver app in Next.js, Expo/React Native and Firebase. The proofs worked, and the owner funded a full engineering team to build the production apps. I mentored the new engineers and wrote the foundational docs.

SEO Tree

Work in progress · My own product

A SaaS product for SEO professionals, with Stripe billing and an interactive visual sitemap.

SEO Tree is my own product, and it is still a work in progress. I built the billing on Stripe: subscription tiers, 14-day trials, pro-rated upgrades and cancellation. I also wrote a custom layout engine that draws every page of a site as an interactive visual sitemap.

Radiant RT Symptom Tracker

Pilot · Sole developer

A mobile app for people going through radiation therapy.

Radiant has a daily check-in across five symptoms that takes about a minute, week-by-week guides matched to the treatment timeline, and a library of guided audio sessions. I was the sole developer, building it from the founder's concept in TypeScript with Expo and React Native, so one codebase runs on iOS and Android. It is in a pilot, not a public store release.

About

Engineer and designer

I'm Ryan Astaphan, a full-stack software engineer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I work remotely. Since September 2021 I've built software for Hive Tech, which owns MedRide Transportation, an NEMT company in Colorado.

Before I wrote software for a living, I co-owned a tattoo studio in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I designed its website and learned SEO there. I've been the owner who pays for software and calls when it breaks. That still shapes what I build.

I work across the stack: TypeScript and C#/.NET, React and React Native, AWS and Firebase. I also design in Figma.

  • Sole engineer on a scheduling engine that runs in production.
  • Design to deploy Figma, front end, back end, cloud.
  • Mentoring and docs for the team that followed my proofs of concept.

FAQ

Short answers

What did you build alone?

I was the only engineer on the auto-scheduler and the only developer on the proofs of concept. The engineering team that followed those proofs built the current production web and mobile apps. I mentored that team and wrote its foundational docs.

Do you work remotely?

Yes. I live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and I've worked remotely for Hive Tech since 2021.

Is the scheduler demo the real engine?

No. It is a simplified illustration of the scheduling problem, not the production engine. It runs on synthetic data: a sample city and made-up riders. No real rider or company data is in it.

How were the dollar figures worked out?

Figures marked "Estimated by Ryan" are my own estimates. The empty-mile savings use planned figures at the owner's prices. The 11-day test compares the scheduler's plans with the team's own plans.

Do you take freelance projects?

Yes. I build websites, software, mobile apps and automation for small businesses, and I do SEO. Email me a few lines about the project.

What's the best way to reach you about a role?

Email or LinkedIn. My resume is linked at the top of the page.
